Sasha with Hi and George and a Sasha Family History. | Sasha with Hi and George and a Sasha Family History.

Description:Hi was not close to his father, but was very close to the youngest of the siblings, Sasha (Allan R. Bloom).
The story goes that when Vera followed Lawrence to the United States with the rest of her children - a brood of 4 girls and one boy, they each had to be "processed" through immigration. The immigration official went through each of the children´s names and "americanized" the most Russian sounding names (e.g. Luba became Lillian), and when they got to the youngest, the immigration official asked Vera, "And what´s this one´s name.?". Vera replied, "Sasha", and the Immigration official shook his head no, saying "We don´t have Sashas here in America. What does it mean?". Vera answered, its a nickname for the Czar, "Alexander". The Immigration official smiled and said, "OK, he´ll be Alex .. no, wait, we just had an Alex, we´ll name him Allan", and henceforth, Sasha became Allan. Later, just to have a middle name presence, Sasha decided to add the letter "R" as his middle initial, not standing for anything at all.
Sasha became a regional buyer/supplier for Thrifty Drug Company, and was so effective that when he died, it took three people to replace him.
All the nephews, Mort, George, and Hi cared for Sasha a great deal, but none more than Hi, who craved the parental love he never got from Lawrence.
I´ve always thought that Sasha got Hi his first drink and they traveled together and saw each other often.
Sasha was gay, which was, in her era, an "infamnia" (to quote the Godfather) and this part of Sasha´s background was spoken about in whispers, but he was so loved by Hi, that when Sasha died, in 1949, he named his first son (yours truly) after him, and although the first name of Allan was changed to Allen, the name of Sasha continued.
Here he is depicted with Hi and George in Torrance, California (where Sasha apparently lived) in January, 1946, three years before his death.

Description:Don´t we all look snazzy. And couldn´t anyone smile!?
I vaguely remember that a professional photographer took our picture while we lived in Riverside, California. Barry was born December 14, 1956 in a Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Fontana, California (adjacent to Riverside) and he looks about a year or so old her. Dennie (who was born February 19, 1946 in Detroit) must have been about 11 years old. I was born October 15, 1950 (in Los Angeles) so I was probably 6 or 7 here. I still remember having that sweater vest. [show more]

Sweet Masha | Sweet Masha

|
Description:Masha Grodsky Odinak sitting sweetly on a chair in 1931. Masha was a wonderful person. Smart, oh so smart, holding advanced degrees from several universities. I knew her married to her wonderful husband Alec Odinak and living in New Haven, Connecticut. I met her earlier when she would visit her parents, Morris and Rita Grodsky in Los Angeles, after they moved from Chicago, but I spent time in her house at 65 Cleveland Road, New Haven, Connecticut. (Their house was right across from Yale Bowl, so the boys, Mitch and Tommy, would rent out their front yard to park cars for spending money on Yale football game days). Masha was a professor, I believe at the New School in New York. https://www.newschool.edu/admission/visit/plan-your-visit/
Afflicted by polio at an early age, her mouth twisted in the corner and slightly impacted the sound of her voice. Masha was a modern woman amongst modern woman. Creative, innovative, interesting, kind, nurturing. She was dedicated to her parents, but Rita drove her crazy. She loved her two boys and her husband. Avidly political on both a national and local scale, she was often involved in important causes. She was generous in her manner and demeanor. A favorite cousin of the Bloom boys.
The items which are displayed on the table and the wall her in this picture indicative of the type of items that Morris and Rita had in their house on Gardner Street in Los Angeles, California. [show more]

|
|
Description:In the 1960's Hi began a process of trying to create a family tree. It continued through his retirement and to his death on February 14, 2011.
These two pictures are copies of copies of his paternal grandparents, Vera Blumen Bloom, who, in the middle of her life, came to the United States from Nezjin, Russia, and settled in Chicago. Her husband, Moisha Blumen, never came to the United States, died in Kyiv of heart problems.
For a wonderful description of the Blumen´s and life in Russia, read Mort´s first chapter in his book, connected here. Though, like any oral history, there are certain disagreements regarding some details (I was always told that L.A. Bloom came to the United States at the age of 16 in 1903, not 18 in 1905) the general history is consistent with what the family knows. [show more]
